The building figure composed of several parts condenses the site and unites the different scales and typologies of the slab and the courtyard that characterise its surroundings. The proposed volume nestles up against the fire wall of the existing building and with its central internal courtyard creates an outdoor space of high quality. The generously dimensioned courtyard becomes the social centre of the housing development. The access decks, which face onto the courtyard, are a circulation and balcony structure that can potentially be appropriated by the community of residents. By making one wing of the new building taller than the buildings immediately beside it an independent symbol is placed in the district.

The uses proposed for the ground floor such as a café with outdoor seating and flexibly sized studios along Briesestrasse activate the urban space. Each of the four building parts responds with its simple basic structure and typology to its specific position in the mesh. Apartments ranging in size from 1 to 4 rooms, studio apartments and large apartments with additional communal areas are created. Within the flexible ‘shelf’ the mix of apartments can be adapted with little difficulty.
