Urban strategy

The market is located in the intersection of two public squares. The aim of our project is to become a joint between them. With that purpose, we propose a covered public space, flexible enough to host any kind of community events: assemblies, performances, sports, playgrounds, etc. This is achieved by the modulation of the ground in movable platforms like those used in theatre. We actually use the small church of san Miguel as a background for our scene.

Pallets

The building is shaped by stacking layers over that space in the manner pallets are usually piled in markets. The resulting volume is a frame of timber pieces hosting the different functions, allowing daylight to enter through the gaps, and introducing plants and sun protection.

Game of lights and shadows projected on the ground continues with the pattern created by the trees in the two nearby squares.

Flexibility and modules

The pallets concept leads us to a geometric and technologic approach. Modulation and prefabrication of elements allows various sizes of spaces by addition of basic units.

We propose bigger shops downstairs, modular kiosks at first floor and co-working offices at second floor. These last two follow the same modulation so can switch. A linear block in the south part concentrates the managing uses as well as restaurants at ground level, and connects the different levels through a ramp. Loading areas and a car park are located in the basement.
