The new building of the National Center for Contemporary Art in Khodynka Field must become the main national institution and a focus for all possible ventures in the sphere of contemporary art. The proposal for the building of the NCCA is located in the center of the intesively developing area. Thereby, the construction of museum and the park, that is planned to be created nearby, will become the important steps on the way to the complex transformation of the whole surrounding area.

Pithiness and modesty, which are expressed in the whole volume and stylistics of the building, will emphasize it’s significance to the state and bring balance to the inevitable cacophony of the urban space. The appearance of the building will create advantageous contrast with the landscaping of the park and correspond with the endeavour to bring forth the educational function in the field of the contemporary art. Functional layout of the plot, was aimed at the priority of the public space, and became crucial during the volume configuration of the building.

The main task of the project was to create the platform for the events, that will educate, amaze, stay in memory, and push people to come back again. The volume of the building should conform to the rational scheme of the allocation of the functional and their correspondence, that’s why it was divided into four main “layers”.

First “layer” — is physical and symbolical foundation of the building. Whole storey is intended for the permanent exhibition of the the NCCA. Planning layout of the permanent exhibition form the labyrinth. Freely allocated showrooms allowing to obtain necessary flexibility and unpredictability during the free examination of the exposition. In the «chaos» of the labyrinth, visitor immersing in the depth of the information, in which he can build the route by himself and physically percept the mass and multiformity of the XX–XXI cc. art. Also, labyrinth has huge potential for the forming of predetermined way through the exposition, which could be modified by the curator at ease. Spaces between the showrooms can be eventually supplemented with art from the swiftly expanding collection of the museum.

Main loading bays are situated on the same level, in the rear part of the building. Loading is fulfilled via the central core, that interconnecting whole museum. Second “layer” is educational. Openness and accessibility are the basic notions of the planning decisions for this layer. This part of the building consists of the external labyrinth, formed by the volumes of the uneven halls of the permanent exhibition on the operated roof, public space, that occupies two storeys of the building, workshops, and center of the collections with the area of the open archive of the NCCA. All these areas subsequently will became the additional stages for the regular lectures, workshops and discussions.

Third «layer» temporary exhibition.Distinctive monolithic volume of the exhibition hall is deprived of any planning decisions. Inner purity will promote any new appearing forms of the curator’s and artist’s activity.

The last, forth “layer” — is the engine of the NCCA. Scientifical and publishing activities of the center, are tightly bound to the administration, artist’s residences and museum’s restaurant, forming this whole volume.
The building itself emphasize the idea of autonomity, that is necessary for the experiment, innovation in art, social function of the vigorous knowledge production, interdisciplinar exchange and conservation of the art.
