The fundamental project vector is the awareness that the construction of the new school center Don G. Lozer will be a new piece of the city capable of taking on the future needs of the community, acting as a social incubator and responding to two major objectives: flexibility and permeability.
The intervention is designed according to the school population, with particular attention to the need to provide pupils and any other possible user with adequate educational spaces with completion functions that give the whole center the characteristics of interfunctionality and autonomous life. The design choices tend to create three autonomous organisms with a high capacity to relate to each other, both for what concerns the formal aesthetic aspect and for what concerns the exercise.
The school is at the same time a large urban space and an open public building, so flexibility in outofschool use is very important. the school today and in the future will be more and more than a place dedicated to teaching, also a place for meeting, meeting, party and culture, whose equipment and indoor and outdoor spaces will be used by children but also by adults: gym, auditorium and entrance square are, together with the green areas, designed as spaces for the community.
The volumetric composition of the building comes from a sequence of spaces that generate a climax of environments that gradually adds intimacy to the public. The fragmentation of these macrospaces allows the building to break down into different volumes, thus fragmenting the scale and integrating with the least possible impact with the surrounding urban scale while maintaining its institutional aspect.
The new square of the school complex is configured not only as a place of entry or meeting but at the same time as a showcase for the sports activities of the gym where parents can wait for children to find themselves safe from traffic. The meeting between the front of the school foyer and the front of the sports facility is characterized by a covered niche that offers a sheltered place. Crossing the threshold of entry we find a reception inside a filter space that allows access to the functions available to the whole community such as the gym and the auditorium. This first space is followed by a large agora that can be set up to replace the auditorium for smaller meetings or performances.
Continuing we enter the real educational center, characterized by a symmetrical plan that sees opposed at the ends two double heights that connect the horizontal and vertical distribution system as well as offering a space for recreational relaxation of the children. Developed on three levels, the didactic block offers on the ground floor the laboratory spaces available also in extracurricular hours and on the upper floors the standard classrooms for daily teaching. The distribution system presents a boiserie that, with a play of volumes, generates a space of being. It will be the task of the students to appropriate them, inventing new uses or simply “living in” them during the breaks in teaching.
A central patio offers a protected garden where students can spend recreations or organize outdoor lessons. The complex has a service access from the north with a private car park for the teaching staff. Around the building there is a green belt to protect and improve the urban environment.
The choice of external finishes is strongly influenced by the proximity of the tower castle, in fact its dual materiality is taken up and reviewed in a contemporary key, contrasting bushhammered and smooth concrete. The lightness of the glass and the warmth of the wood contrast with the material rigor given by the transposition of the structural mesh on the façade …
– visual permeability that reduces the internal external boundary and allows greater control, – corridors with benches towards the patio
– use yellow color, vehicle color facilitator of learning that is accurately inserted in the interiors … create an effective action space for teaching
– The use of large windows allows the direct gain on the South-East fronts: this choice, at the same time favors the reduction of energy consumption for heating and the limitation of the use of artificial lighting, in favor of the natural one.
