A strong context appeals to new ways of thinking and new answers. The design aims to improve the cultural sphere of Bamiyan by creating an entity adapted for various purposes like festivals, films, places of collective meetings. The main issue was to create a place that will reveal the deep history of the region. Nevertheless, this new social place tends to promote new local artists and conceptual art.
The community itself will emerge as a unique entity dedicated to spread out local skills and values to the whole country. The design is thought as a microcosm where the amenities meet each other in a very specific way while they have their own privileged access through the corridors and patios. It consists of simple volumes which are linked to each other similarly as a village will link his maisonettes. This well-known shapes that are part of the design are finding their architectural quality in the relationship they’re maintaining with their in-between spaces (alleyways, courtyards…). The given image of this whole is consequently strong although integrated in a larger whole formed by the magnificent site.
The major choice of this shapes was the typology of the roofs that are a subtle and discrete way to show the greatness of the design. In the openings point of views, we decided to have glass bands all over the design that can stay wide open in the winter and enclosed during summer to provide shading and cool atmosphere inside. Right behind those openings we will be able to find honored point of views through the landscape.
This agglomeration of simple volumes with a distinguished roofscape and privileged in-between spaces is representing for us the community of people associated altogether through culture. This organization allows the independent use of each program giving birth to various setup of the whole entity as a colorful leaving and breathing environment. The Bamiyan Cultural Centre exist through the seasons and through the people that are making him evolve as an entity that has the ability to gather and unify each of every human being.
