Extension Bündner Kunstmuseum is a second prize competition entry by EM2N for Canton of Graubünden in 2012. It is located in Chur Switzerland in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 3.461 sqm. Key material is concrete. Review the 5 proposals for the same competition.

In extending the Kunstmuseum the existing Villa Planta is to retain its formative role. On the other hand the extension building is to assert its independence and, in addition, should be clearly legible as a new entrance. Continuums are formed consisting of independence and augmentation, of systems and departures from them that lead to an architecture of ‘both-and’. The new building achieves this balancing act by a form that is cut out at the corners and a dramatically tall silhouette.

The set-back hollows created by the volumetric incisions make a strongly sculptural statement that invites visitors to come closer, while also establishing a relationship to the reactivated historic main approach to the site. A glazed foyer is proposed at ground floor level. The first basement level is divided by load-bearing walls into five spatial layers. On this level the existing building and the new building are connected to each other. The temporary exhibition space on the second basement level is designed as an open floor that is free of columns thanks to a special structural concept.
