Adaptive reuse of a sugar factory hall into conference and community center The proposal “Fragments of Nostalgia M02025” has been awarded the first prize in the national open and anonymous competition for the restoration and adaptive reuse of the factory “La Azucarera” in Monzon, Spain. The project will preserve and transform the main sugar industrial hall into a conference center and will include additional co-working and shared spaces for local associations. The factory will have restored back its original morphology to accommodate a multifunctional open space. What once was the main driving force in the regional economy will be now a space for cultural activities and multigenerational interactions, reclaiming its presence in the city as a public center. The project defines a mixed strategy, in which different interventions could be addressed separately, alternatively and over time but with a defined and clear master plan, to avoid interferences and optimize resources. The proposal will also transform the adjacent area into a public park with community gardens and a farmers’ market. The set of interventions will be partially funded as one of the strategic projects in the Urban Agenda program for the EU.
