Learning Center is an academic project by Fala for FAUP designed in 2011. It is located in Oporto Portugal in a seaside setting. Its scale is small. Key material is concrete. Concepts such as tower and monolith are explored.

I feel a great respect for the place. Its identity is to me a fundamental point and must be kept intact. The program is exceptional, different from everything that surrounds it, which allows for a great freedom of form. Of the understanding of these conditions, the proposal is developed. The intention is to create a physical element of strong identity that marks the territory and serves as a visual reference. I feel this abstract concept and without definite shape in the sculptures of eduardo chillida, and how they signal spaces where they fit, while they communicate either with places or with people. Is this dialogue that i intend to create. Thus emerges this vertical axis, a monolith of simple lines, where are the quieter and individual programs, of rest, of contemplation. In contrast, three independent volumes, half-buried, sustain the busiest services. The monolithic vertical piece would be built in a unitary material, strong, neutral, but in contrast to the surrounding, with the same identity on the outside and inside. On the other hand, the three volumes, being independent, would have a different material and a contrasting color on the outside. However, each volume has a distinct program, acquiring different shapes and different interiors, each with its own identity.
