Leventina is a proposal by NEUME for Schweizerische Rheinhäfen and Port of Switzerland designed in 2024. It is located in Basel Switzerland in a riverside and industrial setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 1.384 sqm. Key materials are metal and glass. Áron Lőrincz collaborated as visualizer. Concepts such as tower folded facade and solar shading are explored.

A major urban transformation is underway in Kleinhüningen. A new district is set to emerge, with the new SRH port headquarters, Leventina – Ahoi!, playing a key role. Positioned as a functional landmark at the entrance to Harbor Basin 2, this building embodies a fusion of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.

Architecture

Leventina is a flexible, modular building constructed from standardized industrial elements, designed to adapt to future needs. The structure deliberately omits a basement to minimize environmental impact and facilitate potential deconstruction or modifications. Its design is inspired by sailing constructions. The building is divided into three main areas: Ground floor at Rhine level, housing workshops, storage, and technical facilities, with direct external access. Bel étage at bridge level, featuring public spaces, communal areas, and a wraparound terrace. This level offers views of the harbor and provides access for visitors. Upper floors, containing office spaces, training, and meeting rooms. The top floor accommodates the command center and dispatch office.

Sustainability and materials

Leventina prioritizes sustainable construction with a focus on circular economy principles. The primary structure consists of a steel framework with thin steel-concrete composite floors, while interior spaces feature wooden elements to create a warm atmosphere. The facade incorporates solar panels that serve as summer heat protection and visually structure the building. The north side features vertical greenery to enhance the microclimate. The recycling yard is generously designed and covered by an extended roof, providing weather protection
and reducing light pollution. Solar panels installed on the roof generate energy.

Office Concept and flexibility

The office floors are designed for maximum spatial flexibility. Movable walls and decoupled building services allow for easy reconfiguration of layouts. The Bel étage is deliberately conceived as a public space, enabling schoolchildren to observe harbor activities up close. Leventina represents a sustainable and adaptable architectural concept that meets both functional and aesthetic demands, bridging the gap between the port‘s industrial heritage and its future development.
