Library at University of Technology in Koszalin is a proposal by Studio GAB for Universtity of Technology Koszalin in 2020. It is located in Koszalin Poland in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 6.000 sqm a budget of 11.550.000 € and a ratio of 1.925 €/sqm. Key materials are concrete and wood. Gid Studio collaborated as visualizer.

The main idea behind the design of the Cognitarium building was to create a space that would set the direction of development for the possible expansion of the campus, and at the same time bond the existing buildings and the surrounding greenery.

Closing the campus from the east side and at the same time creating a new, main axis connecting it with the surroundings, makes it possible to develop a complex of academic buildings in a coherent and organized manner. Cognitarium is meant to be a determinant and a model in this sense in creating a new space on the campus of the Koszalin University of Technology.

The new library building is designed to affect its closest surroundings, and its open character is aiming to attract and focus students, offering the opportunity to meet, but also to work in concentration.

The layout of the Cognitarium building refers to the archetypal Dom-Ino House structure created by Le Corbusier, in which only columns play the role of load transfer, creating a characteristic column-plate system with a visible arrangement of binders on the geometric grid of the structural system.

In terms of impressions, the arrangement refers to Sol LeWitt’s spatial structures, which built the space with their repeating geometric arrangement.

This arrangement responds to the Employer’s request to be open to the possibility of free expansion and adaptation in the future thanks to the creation of the building with a simple and legible construction layout.

The heart of the building is the main library, where is a podium connecting it with the reading room located on the first floor.

Due to the organized functional and structural layout, the Cognitarium building implements the ideas of Harry Faulkner Brown regarding the creation of library space, strongly responding to the need for flexibility, extensibility as needed, compact communication, as well as order enabling easy and quick contact between the reader and the book.
