☉ Maison du Peuple is an academic project by Silas Leowald designed in 2024. It is located in Brussels Belgium in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 1.400 sqm. Key materials are glass and metal. Concepts such as structural praise open ground floor flexibility and linear block are explored.
The design is positioned as a block on the western edge of the Vossenplein. The ground floor is limited to a narrow usage zone with workshops, cafés and access to the building. Opposite, a roof that seems to fly in the air, slightly twisted in relation to the building structure, divides and defines the market area, while the twist defines new small squares that provide a qualita- tive outdoor space for the cafés located on the square. The streets running around the square is reduced to a minimum. The external appearance of the building is defined by the supporting structure. 24 steel co- lumns in the usage zone of the building support the trusses that float above the building. Cantilevered ceilings are suspended from these towards the Place du Jeu de Balle. This pro- vides a column-free, freely adaptable space on each floor. The use of the building is defined by its form, shape and function: A house for the people. It is accessed by two identical staircases at the head ends. Each floor consists of one large, flexible room that can be divided, closed and changed by curtains or walls. A house for the people must be appropriated by the people. by the people. The Maison du Peuple offers a great potential for this.
