There is an age-old tradition that reveals itself in the details of the lioz stone carvings scattered throughout the city. Steps and quoining in solid, turned stone, worn and shaped by the passage of time, reaching a fragility where they break and lose their edges. These fractures of time are filled with an insitum — a stony graft that fills the gap in a noble ensemble, restoring its form and ensuring continuity. The proposal begins with the introduction of a new, contemporary stone, which aims to resolve the ambiguity of standing out while simultaneously respecting the preexisting elements. This insitum, in its refined form and abstract expression, is placed to reveal a composition of fullness and emptiness: a solid volume representing art and a vegetal void expressing nature. To untangle the narrow street and intensify the relationship between the street, museum, and garden, a dome is excavated to expand the ground floor and establish a new indelible identity, opening a natural nook that integrates MNAC into a corridor of remarkable buildings and public spaces. This subtraction becomes the central point of the new museum, transforming the expansion into a hub of articulation between the different buildings and levels. At the opposite vertex, another subtraction is made to reveal the touch between buildings. Inside, what was concave becomes convex, creating points of light and dynamism in spaces that are flexible and neutral, yet not innocuous. At the back, a core of access and support is resolved, enabling the pure form of the new exhibition rooms. In the new construction, structural programs are integrated, and at the ends of the existing buildings, the more autonomous museum services. This approach centralizes the exhibition areas into a cohesive and fluid route that connects the permanent exhibition rooms to the new temporary exhibition spaces, giving them the responsibility of being the stage for freedom, convergence, and dialogue between art.
