How can a contemporary art museum become a global beacon of contemporary art? How can it unite people? How can it add a valuable public space to the beautiful city of Moscow? How can the building promote art more than the building itself? How can it both create the perfect exhibition space and also contribute to the urban space and development in a generous and social way? We propose to elevate the exhibition space in one connected exhibition floor covering a large public art plaza underneath connecting all the public, social and functional parts of the center in a generous public space. The idea is to both create the perfect exhibition space and at the same time create a whole city of art underneath with open urban spaces, art plazas and main public spaces. In this way the exhibition floor becomes the icon of the building with a city of art underneath.

The art is elevated and articulated and marks the importance of the building and its content within. It appears in the city skyline as the elevated ‘white box’ and from time to time it takes appearance of the exhibition within as a gigantic billboard in the skyline hovering over the park. Each exhibition can perform on the outside of the elevated box allowing the art to appear as the building itself in the city skyline.

The idea is to create a perfect exhibition space with maximum flexibility and changeability. It has the ability to change flow, size and amount of exhibition spaces and daylight conditions. It has the ability to become one enormous exhibition space or as many as needed.

The public heart of the building is the covered art plaza. It is the focal point of the Khodynskoye Pole park and the former runway runs through it. The art plaza is a generous public space for events, public flow and outdoor art exhibitions. The art plaza is mixed with all the public spaces in the new center and from there people can access the art center. In this way the art center becomes a public hub in Khodynskoye Pole with all its amenities, club café, restaurant, shop, children’s area and recreational zones.

The art city is organized in three zones all connected to the art plaza and to each other above ground level: 1. Visitor center: The main entrance and lobby, shop, restaurant, club café. 2. Educational center: conference, lecture and cinema halls, library, reading zones, 3. Administration center: administration, service and loading zone, technical facilities and creative residences.

They are all connected by the exhibition hall as the central exhibition and event space with a spectacular view both out to the Khodynskoye park area underneath the roof and down to the art plaza.
