Rehabilitation of La Casa del Sucre is a finalist competition entry by Aquidos and Toni Riba for BIMSA in 2024. It is located in Barcelona Spain in an urban and park setting. Its scale is medium. Key materials are brick polycarbonate and wood. Kaleidos collaborated as visualizer.

Under the motto BIOATRI, the proposal enhances the new urban centrality of the building, with a very open and permeable ground floor, taking advantage of its position with respect to the Rambla dels Encants and the new Parc de les Glòries, and generating synergies with all the space that surrounds it. The creation of a central lobby, at triple height, that connects the interior with the exterior, reorienting the building towards the great urban space of Glòries stands out. The proposal preserves the original structure of the building, making a minimally invasive interior work that highlights the heritage elements.

The distribution of the program is governed by a central atrium that separates the two historical stages of the building and distributes the uses according to the nature of the activities. The spaces are versatile and flexible, allowing them to be adapted to different uses and maintain unity as a whole. Passive strategies are applied to reduce the energy demand of the building, such as the treatment of spaces as independent «boxes». Useful surfaces are optimized and independent service cores are integrated for each ship, freeing up the main bodies and optimizing energy consumption.
