Schulhaus Davos Platz is a winning proposal by CURA Studio developed in 2022. It is located in Davos Switzerland in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 3.000 sqm. Key materials are wood, glass and concrete.

In Hawaiian culture, «malama» stands for a basic social understanding of preservation and appreciation of the given. While currently a quarter of all CO2 emissions in Switzerland come from the building sector, every new building is faced with the task of resource-saving construction and energy-saving operation. It is therefore a matter of course to seek an integral solution with the existing building, especially in a place that is so directly related to the future generation – that wants to be a role model for it.

The old intermediate building will be extended on the long sides and one floor will be added in order to meet the growing requirements of the school. The new building is thus placed over the entire existing structure and is completely enclosed by a new facade envelope, which meets the thermal requirements as well as pursuing new aesthetic demands. The hybrid appears from the outside as a new building, but 40% of its volume is made up of the existing structure, which means that its share of gray energy can be saved considerably.
