Silo is a winning proposal by Space&Matter and NL Architects for Heutink Group in 2024. It is located in Deventer Netherlands in an industrial and riverside setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 3.000 sqm. Key materials are wood and metal. Drip Visuals collaborated as visualizer. Concepts such as folded facade cantilever opening and green roof are explored.

An integral circular system for the future

What sets SILO apart from other projects is its holistic approach to circularity. In addition to using 60% biobased materials, such as CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) and repurposed steel, the design revolves around a future-proof system that adapts to changing housing needs. The building is designed to be easily transformed and reconfigured, allowing for various housing types – from family homes to co-living and workspaces. The project aspires to adaptive architecture: a building that can grow alongside its residents and the wider community. This flexibility makes SILO sustainable not only in its materials but also in its functionality, ensuring the building remains relevant for generations to come. Space for collaboration and community engagement The ground floor of SILO will be a dynamic, transparent space that fosters interaction not only among residents but also with the neighborhood and the city. These spaces are designed for public and community-focused activities and can easily adapt to future needs. This is a circular building not only at a material level but also socially and functionally.

Local collaboration and innovation

Another distinguishing feature of SILO is its collaboration with local partners, including **Farmers for Biobased Building**, ensuring that materials are sourced as locally as possible. This amplifies the project’s impact by shortening supply chains and further reducing the ecological footprint. Space&Matter is closely working with partners such as DGMR and BUCC to bring this radical concept to life and set an example of how circularity can be fully realized in architecture.

A vision for the future

SILO sets a new benchmark for circular and future-oriented construction. Not only through its innovative use of materials, but also through the flexibility and adaptability of its design. This building is crafted to meet the challenges of both today and tomorrow.
