Solar Hexaprism is a proposal by Coll-Barreu Arquitectos developed in 2024. It is located in Valladolid Spain in a suburbs setting. Its scale is large with a surface of 16.500 sqm. Key materials are metal and wood. Concepts such as linear block open ground floor usable roof sustainability nature aggregation and balcony are explored.

Located on a steep hillside, Solar Hexaprism consists of a six-sided horizontal prism that floats over an undulating terrain. This avoids costly earthworks and abrupt transformations of the existing natural landscape and produces a curved ground porch for games, gymnastics, bicycles, walks, and protection from the sun and rain that will undoubtedly catalyze community life. The interior of the prism is defined by a longitudinal spine of circulations filled with natural light, which leads to the roof. It is a large interior room through which everyone passes and can meet. The roof of the Solar Hexaprism works as a micro-city and provides the dwelling with collective services that function as a topological ecosystem of shared services. Each activity corresponds to a different shape, so that people coexist with their meeting pretexts and occupy the roof with freedom and ease. The prism breathes and has a controlled natural air flow in its central spine. This allows all dwellings to have natural north-south cross ventilation and cool the dwellings in the summer at zero cost and with zero emissions.

Solar Hexaprism uses the sun to produce electricity, provide food crops in the vegetable gardens, and maintain the green roofs, which effectively contribute to the building’s climate insulation. During the summer, the pressure differences between the sides of the building will cause the circulating air to completely envelop the prism and cool the building in a direct, permanent, fast and natural way. Each house unit has a box/terrace that collects and distributes light and air. Adjustable slats on the opposite wall allow for cross-ventilation. The bathrooms are modular and have compact elements that can be prefabricated. The floor plan of the house, its double circulations and sliding doors ensure communication between occupants or complete privacy. The rooms on each side function as mini-apartments, while the central strip of the house is occupied by the meeting spaces.
