The district of COOP is a proposal by Ekin Tunc developed in 2016. It is located in Strasbourg France in an industrial setting. Its scale is extralarge. The concept of urban transformation is explored.

The project focuses on the influence of ephemeral architecture through an urban perception. The main idea is to invest in several abandoned areas in the city of Strasbourg. These chosen spaces accommodate an artistic intervention or a performance which offers a second life to empty places. Thanks to these interventions, the unused spaces are recycled and revived with an artistic temporary event, by creating a path allowing a different perception of the city center. This promenade offers several art works in the city center and brings the viewer to the district of COOP which is one of the largest abandoned and unused sites in Strasbourg. The project transforms the COOP district, which is a large industrial site, into an urban laboratory, a space for sharing and art. It proposes five interventions that will completely change the district and transform it into not only an accessible and lively place, but also into a machine for digital and artistic production. The reuse of the COOP sector represents the future of the city with an ecological and heritage solution: the project offers the use of existing buildings instead of building new ones.

The project consists in the transformation of the entire neighborhood. Five different projects draw the limits of the big scale/urban project and every intervention brings a new character to the zone. The programs and structures are flexible and modular which allow an easy transformation and modification of functions. Every intervention propose a different activity, such as Machines of Coop (Digital 3D production), Urban Agriculture (Local production and farming), Observation Tower (Panoramic view of the surrounding industrial area), Roller Coaster (Entertainment and workshops for children) and Coop Building (Old wine factory transformed into artist studios). This transformation gathers together the inhabitants, creates “agoras” and makes people interact for their future city. Finally, the main idea of the project focuses on the concepts of sharing, sustainability and art in order to answer the question: How to reintegrate COOP into a city logic through the ephemeral and the event?
