Urnes World Heritage Centre is a proposal by Nordland Arkitekter developed in 2021. It is located in Urnes Norway in a riverside setting. Its scale is small with a surface of 709 sqm. Key material is wood.

Our proposal for a new World Heritage Centre is designed to sit lightly in the landscape and to be subordinate to the Stave Church and the other buildings in the area. Through a humble architecture the project creates a unifying, site-specific narrative about the area’s unique natural and cultural heritage. The proposal goes beyond the design of the World Heritage Centre, by offering a coherent journey-based concept for experience and movement through the area to the church. The proposal makes the new World Heritage Centre a small piece of a larger narrative, linking the qualities of the area and supporting sustainable tourism in Urnes.
