The new Firestation North – a compact cube- takes on the alignment of the southern access road, inserting itself independently and simultaneously interacting with the surrounding streets. True to the motto – show what you do – the future use occupies the functional and flexible plateau and presents itself as a functional firestation with the hall and the tower towards the access road. Due to its location in the “Neue Aue” natural area, a very compact solution was chosen to minimize sealing and preserve as much valuable ground as possible. Additionaly, the building was shifted as far north as possible into the less wooded area to preserve the existing tree stock. Compactness and simple construction are the catalysts of the design. Comple building shapes and elaborate structural systems are to be avoided. Due to its prominent location at the access point to the port area, the new building presents itself as a striking and powerful structure. In this way, the new building fulfills its urban significance as an entrance to the port area.
