High School Giovanni Verga is a fifth prize competition entry by UP4 Studio EUPRO and Fabrizio Occhipinti Amato developed in 2023. It is located in Adrano Italy in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 5.600 sqm a budget of 15.000.000 € and a ratio of 2.679 €/sqm. Key materials are concrete and wood. Riccardo De Vincenzo collaborated as visualizer.

The intervention concerns the contruction of a high school building for about 450 kids. The design of the new building which will replace the existing one is based on five key principles:

– Reuse of the footprint of the existing building,
– Construction system in CLT and xlam,
– Close relationship between the building and natural environment,
– Outdoor terraces and south exposure for each classroom,
– Rational, flexible and functional layout.

The project is conceived as a compact volume with a squarish plan, which can efficiently replace the existing building by improving the functional and structural aspects as well as the relationship with the landscape, a crucial element in a plot where the complexity of the topography represents an important constraint.
