☉ Community Center Kematen am Innbach is a fifth prize proposal by MOON Architektur for Gemeinde Kematen am Innbach in 2024. It is located in Kematen am Innbach Austria in a countryside setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 1.416 sqm a budget of 4.204.000 € and a ratio of 2.969 €/sqm. Key materials are wood and concrete. IMG bureau collaborated as visualizer. Concepts such as platform sloped roof and transparency are explored.
The “Vierkanthof” as a Local architectural motif Inspired by the traditional, locally typical architectural form of the four-sided farmstead (Vierkanthof), we propose a compact building design. The structure is precisely and confidently positioned, blending well into the local
environment due to its characteristic roof shape.
The Hall as the Center
Unlike the classic “Vierkanthof”, the courtyard in the new community center is replaced by the hall as the central element. This creates a place for communal gatherings, serving both the local residents and visitors from outside the community.
Urban Placement and External Access
The compact building is positioned in the northern part of the site, creating a spatial edge and a façade facing Innbachstraße. According to the traffic concept, access to the open, covered parking spaces is provided here. Six employee parking spaces, plus two additional spaces, are included. The new library is accessible directly from the newly created sidewalk via a cut in the landscape. Visitor parking and the main entrance plaza are accessible from Grub-Mallinger-Straße, located in the southern part of the site. A green buffer zone with unpaved parking (grass paver stones) separates the community center from the plaza.
Efficient Building Placement and Visibility
In addition to the spatial qualities mentioned, positioning the building in the northern area brings further advantages. Excavation is minimized due to the program’s placement on the site, reducing the need for a large basement. Access points align with the existing or planned street levels. The southern area is maximized to allow space for both the necessary parking and a spacious entrance plaza with adjacent green zones.
