Entrance Pavilion at the Crypt in Colonia Güell is an honour mention competition entry by Sara Navazo and Edorta Larizgoitia for Aula Cerámica Hispalyt in 2014. It is located in Barcelona Spain in a rural and old town setting. Its scale is medium. Key material is brick.

What is the way to act in a place so privileged as this? and more when the purpose is to serve as a prelude to the Crypt Güell. We taken some basic decisions that will structure the proposal:

Unify

There’re two tasks entrusted, defining the enclosure of the complex and the construction of the entrance pavilion. It’s understood that as a whole, without a differentiation; It is a whole. It’s unified in form and material; conducting an ongoing project that spans the perimeter, is not to make a punctual action.

Hide

Nothing more interesting than ignore what awaits us behind, the surprise of the unknown, this becomes one of the pillars, lifting a veil that does not tell us who is behind it, we can only intuit; therefore the subsequent emotion will be higher.

Prepare

We wanted to turn the building into a kind of filter, a preparation for what will enjoy later during the visit. The atmosphere, materials, light input set the tone.

Tour

Reinforcing the idea of the previous point, the pavilion appears as a series of 6 walls. The form disintegrates, we do not perceive; the building becomes route, with different uses proposed. The visitor arrives gradually wanders through space, is prepared and goes to meet with the Crypt, the curved wall closure accompanies it.

Materiality

The material is everything in this project would not be understood of otherwise. Plastic Brick capacity is harnessed and exploited playing with different gear,  provisions, hollow; all to create textures and sensations.
