Located in a city with over 750 years of tradition, boasting impressive architecture and surrounding nature, the new Alšova Jihočeská Gallery aspires to be a dynamic civic space for the residents of České Budějovice and tourists from around the world. The new Alšova Jihočeská Gallery presents an opportunity not only to create a place for «memory storage» but also an open space for dialogue, inspiration, and creative expression. Externally, the volume of pure geometric lines transparently reveals the activities within and strives to engage with its surroundings. The double glass facade reflects the city, the square, and the park, aiming to celebrate the beautiful location by «borrowing» reflections and facades from its environment. The building’s external appearance will change from day to night and throughout the seasons. During daylight hours, the skin reflects the surrounding buildings and the beside park, from the greens of spring and summer to the autumnal colors. At night, those inside the building appear as silhouettes, and the building reveals the activities within. The double translucent glass skin envelops the volumes of the exhibition galleries and storage areas. Public spaces are formed in the areas between these volumes and the glass skin that encases everything. Its materiality articulates a contrasting sensitivity: ethereal and light, whose translucency reveals the Museum’s activities to the city.
