New Secondary School is a proposal by M/Studio designed in 2022. It is located in Cavaion Veronese Italy in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 4.000 sqm an estimated budget of 4.000.000 € and a ratio of 1.000 €/sqm. Key material is concrete. Rebel Base collaborated as visualizer.

The concept of the new school complex derives from the design of three volumes that are combined with a permeable and multifunctional space; In the North volume there is the public part with aula magna and administration, on the first floor the «special» teaching rooms (Music, Art, Science Laboratory and Debate room) and the Library.

The secondary school is located in the southern volume with classrooms and toilets. The gym is located to the west, and is connected from the corridor on the first floor, or from the outside for extra-curricular sports activities. The school is organized into three volumes in order to adapt to the conformation of the project area, limiting excavations, raising the «volume» reserved for teaching by three meters; this means that the access to the school complex is at +229m above sea level, but the heart of the activities takes place at + 232m asl. This design choice aims to provide a large atrium in which the flows are distributed in a functional and not promiscuous way. The positioning of the internal and external spaces, which make the school a permeable building, are made for a transversal use of the areas accessible both by students and by citizens in different ways.

The structural system gives a freedom of use of the interior spaces, which can be rethought and reorganized for any future changes. Particular attention to the eco-sustainability of the building, which must approach zero impact (nZEB) by using a system of solar panels on the roof, home automation for the calibration of automatic cooling and heating systems, the system of façades with a high insulating factor, the reuse and collection of waters and the and the cultivation of plants and vegetables to encourage alternative teaching methods and the growth of local products.
