The development of a new center in Oppdal is defined by two premises: The city should become more compact and the activities in the sourrounding landscape should become a part of the central city. With the existing population base, it is difficult to see other sustainable solutions, both socially and economically, to achieve the vibrant city that Oppdal wants.

It is in the duality between a more compact city and a better relationship with the surrounding landscape that the future urban structure of Oppdals should be found. The project connects landscape, city life and the natural activities in one simple strategy – the Oppdal +. The overall strategy is defined by two primary pedestrian areas, which form a + through the city.

The Green River, and a former main road that is transformed into a shared space.
The sourrounding landscape iflows as a green river centrally through the city. A recreational trail linking the features of the landscape (slopes, schools, sports facilities, leisure park) to the central functions of the city (the meeting place, bus station, city hall and cultural center).

Simultaneously the city is densified around one main axis. It is a condensation strategy, which creates a more compact and vibrant city center, along with the creation of a clear urban hierarchy.
