South Harbour Helsinki is a second prize proposal by APRT for Helsinki Municipality designed in 2012. It is located in Helsinki Finland in a seaside setting. Its scale is extralarge. The concept of urban transformation is explored. Review the 2 proposals for the same competition.
The new construction in South Harbour area aims to emphasize the role of Market Square in the middle of historical Helsinki. The new art museum, hotel, cafes and restaurants draw people into the area throughout the year. The sales areas on the Market Square are organized into clear quarters by moving the parking spaces and the structures of water traffic outside the square. The new art museum, situated in the place of Kanavaterminaali, and the new office block next to Tähtitorninmäki enclose a square like space leaving the big ships outside.
