During the design process the idea was to create a one floor kindergarten building, which lies on a smaller slope. With surface rework the site can be suitable for the new building. The idea was to use a simple volume and multiply it to create the building form for the required spaces. The archetype form was transformed different way, by stretching and scaling. With the asymmetric roof and the tilted shorter sides, the goal was to create a various and playful appearance. Because the surrounding area mostly green areas, but in the future probably there will be built environment, this simple form can be a timeless and elegant and has it’s own character.

Functional organisation

The basic form contains the group room. Each of the small volumes contains one of the required spaces. The bigger shapes contain the bigger functional spaces, and by this the inner functional organization appears on the building shape. It was important, because the surrounding area is heterogeneous, and the new building form was created by using the space structure during the formation process. The inner functional organization is a simple and transparent space structure, which is organized and connected by the main pathway. This corridor connects all the rooms, functions and the entrance hall also. The corridor is become wider in front of the group rooms, let bigger space for the children and staff.

The main entrance is in the biggest part of the building, where the children and their family arrive to the entrance hall. There are secondary entrances, for the group rooms and for the staff. On the most right-side part of the building the kitchen, laundry, and operation rooms take place. With its own entrance the kitchen, technical spaces and depots can be used without bothering the kindergarten. By the sides of this central part, there are the group rooms symmetrically. Each room created for 15 children.

Materials and structures

To articulate the surface small scale ceramic tiles were used as cover. It has warm appearance. In the interior, the concept was to create a friendly space for the children. Wood appears on the floor, and on the walls as cover, also as acoustic surface. The wood is the main material, but with different colours and textile it becomes diverse on the interior furnitures. In the garden, there are more playground areas for the children. There is one in front of the group rooms, and the main is next to the building. The whole garden was designed with multi-level green infrastructure, to create shadow and good microclimate for the kindergarten building.
