☉ New Library in Tossa de Mar is a winning proposal by BARRI Studio for Ajuntament Tossa de Mar in 2022. It is located in Tossa de Mar Spain in an urban setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 1.070 sqm. Key materials are brick wood and vegetal. Horoma Studio collaborated as visualizer.
The New Library of Tossa Mar is a space filled with knowledge, cultures, experiences, and nature. The volume of the Library is simple, efficient, and aligned with the adjacent buildings, providing continuity to the urban fabric. Playfulness is added to this volume through the openings of three gardens that connect the library with its surroundings.
The three gardens are spaces of interaction between the social and the natural life of the library: they act like outdoor reading rooms suitable for developing activities. As an urban bioindicator and climate shelter, the library attracts insects, butterflies, and birds thanks to its selection of local plants. It is an invitation to learn about nature and to care for the gardens.
A wooden modular construction system is proposed. The library is built of brick and wood, employing both traditional and sustainable construction methods. Materiality and textures, as well as the commitment to sustainability, give the building a unique character, addressing today’s and tomorrow’s needs.
