☉ Visitor Center Upper Belvedere is a proposal by MOON Architektur for Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in 2024. It is located in Wien Austria in a park setting. Its scale is medium with a surface of 4.960 sqm a budget of 18.000.000 € and a ratio of 3.629 €/sqm. Key material is concrete. IMG bureau collaborated as visualizer. Concepts such as underground and extension are explored.
The new Visitor Center is located on the designated site in the southern forecourt of the Upper Belvedere. In compliance with monument protection regulations, the center will not be visible in its final state within the park area along the baroque mirror axis. The entrance to the Visitor Center is located at the northern end of the “Kavalierstrakt”. This position allows access from both Prinz-Eugen-Straße and the area of the former “Pfirsichgarten”. This approach addresses the requirement for visibility from the street and the wish of the MA 19 (the municipal department responsible for urban development) to explore an alternative access from the front of the “Kavalierstrakt”. At the same time, it welcomes visitors arriving from the Lower Belvedere. Visitors enter the main Visitor Center via a wide staircase or elevator.
The overall concept of the public spaces is designed to meet the functional requirements of these areas. The clear desire for a straightforward route into and out of the museum is reflected in a continuous flow of space. Communicating walls, folded in floor plan, create a sequence of expanding and narrowing spatial sections. Rounded corners of the folded walls create smooth transitions and interconnect the spaces. The widened areas serve various functions such as information/ticketing and provide information points and seating areas for visitor groups. The walls also guide visitors towards the museum entrance. Ceiling-mounted micro-projectors can display content on the walls, such as the history of the building as visitors make their way inside. The exit route leads through the shop, which is defined by a straight shelf wall to the north and one of the folded foyer walls, dividing the space into different zones.
